Real World Classroom: Ethnic Hair Intensive

Dear Fellow Beauty Professionals,

If you walk into non-ethnic salons around the world, majority are unable or uncomfortable servicing ethnic clientele. Sadly, this is a widely known downside to the beauty industry, yet little has changed.

Thankfully, well-known black talent and celebrities are sharing their own unfortunate experiences and shining a broader light on the issue. Just like their non-poc peers, black talent is required to look their best in front of the camera. Yet black talent is often provided a subpar beauty experience for their respective roles due to a beauty professional’s inadequate abilities. Their cobbled together looks in turn affect their confidence and overshadow their work performance.

Bottomline – this is unacceptable. As the world has been forced to reckon with its intolerant, excluding history, it is now time for beauty professionals to expand their knowledge base. There is a lack of multi-faceted beauty professionals, capable of providing equal service to all clientele. There are many reasons for this issue, but one main reason starts with cosmetology schools. Beauty professionals begin honing their craft with materials and topics based on non-ethnic clientele. Their newfound skills are then practiced on non-ethnic mannequins and clients. Unless they intentionally branch out and work with other ethnicities, their skills remain underdeveloped.

I've seen and have been part of the ongoing problem. As my beauty career has taken me all across the globe, I’ve been the only beauty professional at times who can do all ethnicities and textures on set and in salons. As a beauty professional we all have our strengths and weaknesses. It’s our responsibility to gain the skills required.

I deeply desire to do my part to make the beauty industry more inclusive and welcoming of all ethnicities. I created this Ethnic Hair Intensive as a response to that void. In this course I’ll help you develop your skills, so that you are prepared to properly style ethnic clientele, using versatile approaches without damaging hair or skin. This segmented model allows you to select one or all courses to build or expand your skills.

xx,

Debola
